It would be easy for Stan Kenton in his mature years to sit back and reflect on past successes. The great years when the orchestras led by him were awarded the accolades of the music industry: "Band of the Year"in the "Metronome" polls for 1947-1949-1954 and 1956. "Band of the Year" in Downbeat for 1947-1950 and 1954. And in 1954 elected to the "Downbeat Hall of Fame". His struggle to get recognized was hard, for unlike many of his contemporaries-he did not take the easy commercial road to success. He developed Big Band Jazz with styling-voicings and harmonies so new that ofter the public were not ready for them.
